GO HARD OUT OR TAKE THINGS EASY – THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

With such stunning scenery, rivers, gorges and mountains right on our doorstep, it’s no surprise that adventure activities abound in and around Geraldine. Three rivers snake their way through the district; the mighty Rangitata that rises in the Southern Alps and the Waihi and Orari, both with their sources inland in the Four Peaks mountain range. These waterways offer a variety of activities, from white water rafting and kayaking the Rangitata gorge, to canyoning and exploring the waterfalls in the foothills.

If you’d prefer to stay on dry land, Peel Forest, Pioneer Park and Talbot Forest offer the chance to walk through native bush with an intoxicating soundtrack of Korimako (bellbirds) and riroriro (warblers) while you’re followed along the paths by curious (pīwakawaka) fantails and Miromiro (tomtits). If you’re after something a little creepier, take a torch and venture into the bush after dark to see an amazing array of spiders, moths, weta and who knows, maybe a Pekapeka (bat) or two.

Talking of animals, you may be keener on those of a domesticated variety. If so there are farm tours and petting zoos to get up close with something a bit more cuddly.

For those after something a little less outdoorsy, Geraldine has a selection of indoor attractions, including art galleries and museums.

Geraldine makes a great base to explore the whole region with day trips to Takapō/Tekapo, Aoraki/Mt Cook, Omaramara and the Waitaki lakes easily possible.

Around the immediate district, Timaru, Waitaha/Canterbury’s second largest urban centre, is just a 30 minute drive from Geraldine and boasts one of New Zealand’s best love beaches at Caroline Bay. Pleasant Point and Temuka are small rural towns close to Geraldine which offer a unique slice of Kiwi life and are well worth a visit.
